Full and partial dentures
A full denture replaces every tooth in a jaw and rests on the gum. A partial fills in around the teeth you still have and clasps onto them for support. Both are built from impressions of your own mouth.
Getting used to them
New dentures feel bulky at first and speech takes a week or two to settle. Eating comes back gradually, starting with softer food cut smaller. That stage is normal and it passes.
Adjustments are part of it
A denture that fits on the day it is fitted may rub after a couple of weeks of wear. Those follow-up appointments are expected rather than a sign something has gone wrong, and a sore spot is eased rather than put up with.
Relining, later on
The gum under a denture slowly changes shape, fastest in the first year after teeth are removed. When a denture starts to loosen it is usually the mouth that has changed and not the denture, and it can be relined to fit again.
